Meta Descriptions vs Blog Excerpts: Do They Need to Be Different? (Spoiler: No)

Ray de Guzman

Clearing up confusion for Shopify content creators

I spent way too much time writing different text for meta descriptions and blog excerpts. Turns out, I was overthinking it.

The Short Answer: They Can Be the Same

According to Yoast and Google's guidelines, using identical text for both isn't duplicate content. Here's why:

Different purposes:

  • Meta descriptions appear in search results
  • Excerpts appear on your site's archive pages
  • Google treats them as separate elements

Why This Matters for Content Creators

Time efficiency - Write once, use twice
Message consistency - Reinforces your content's value proposition
SEO safety - No penalty for using the same text

Shopify-Specific Benefits

Shopify's content management makes this approach particularly effective:

  • Streamlined workflow - Less admin work, more content creation
  • Consistent branding - Same message across touchpoints
  • Mobile optimization - Shorter text works better on mobile

When to Consider Different Text

Use different text when:

  • Your excerpt needs more context for archive pages
  • You want to A/B test different hooks
  • The content serves very different audiences

Stick with same text when:

  • Creating tutorial or educational content
  • Writing personal/authentic content
  • Publishing regularly (efficiency matters)

My Recommendation

Write one compelling 150-160 character summary that works for both. Focus on:
- Clear value proposition
- Target keywords naturally
- Your authentic voice

Bottom line: Don't overthink it. One good summary beats two mediocre ones every time.
