Cold Open Joke

So what's the difference between a crazy person talking to themselves in public and a YouTuber? Equipment.

Intro

What's up everybody, Ray here coming at you from Bangkok, Thailand. I'm at the Emporium and I thought I'd try something different, something outside of my comfort zone. I'm vlogging outdoors in public and speaking to the camera in public. This is a follow-up episode to my video on how to get over your fear of speaking on camera. I think this is the next level up—the next level would be speaking on camera in public.

The Problem With Advice From Attractive People

I've watched a bunch of videos about how to get over your fear of speaking in public or vlogging in public, and it just so happens a lot of the people giving this advice are attractive, good-looking people. That doesn't compute. It's like asking a rich person how to not be poor, or a super tall pro basketball player how to dunk—easy peasy lemon squeezy. So I thought I'd give my perspective: the unattractive person's perspective.

Technique 1: Practice at Home

Number one is you have to get a lot of practice in before you go outside and try to speak on camera in public. If you're not comfortable speaking on camera in private, in your own room, what makes you think you'll be any better outdoors when there are real people around, looking at you and potentially judging you? So make sure you practice a lot at home. Once you become comfortable with that, you're more likely to be comfortable outside.

Technique 2: Switch to Voice Notes

Another technique I developed is to switch from written notes to voice notes. I've just been doing this for the last couple of weeks, and already it's changed my whole confidence and comfort level with speaking on camera. You have to get the mental pathways going—get in the habit before you can feel comfortable vlogging in public.

Technique 3: Reframe Your Mindset

Think about this: do you have any problem doing a video phone call in public? If not, what's the difference with recording on camera? A vlog in public is just like a video call—it's just asynchronous. Realize that you're making this for somebody, assuming they're going to watch. At minimum, it's going to be you or your family. You are on a call; it's just asynchronous.

Recap

Number one: practice at home speaking on camera. Number two: switch your written notes to voice notes. Number three: think of your vlogs as an asynchronous phone call with your audience.

My Challenges

I want to start vlogging more often, not having to have a super polished version of my videos. My ideal goal is to be able to vlog daily, but it's been a hard challenge because I'm a recovering perfectionist. I'm trying to be okay with posting something that's not polished.

Outro

If you got something out of that, don't forget to like, comment, and share with a friend. I'll see you in the next video!
