Transcript

Introduction

Hey all! In my last video, we covered an app called Vibe, which was an amazing app for creating unlimited transcriptions on your Mac laptop or desktop—fully featured, free, and open source. Everything is done locally, so it's private and at no cost. Check out that video if you haven't already!

Savings Potential

Let me show you how much you could save with the solution I'm about to show you. Otter.ai is one of the most popular transcription apps on desktop and mobile. Their free version gives you 300 monthly transcription minutes, 30 minutes per conversation, and you can only import and transcribe three audio or video files lifetime per user. If you do a lot of transcription, you'll run out of that quota quickly. The pro version is $8.33/month (annual) or $17/month (monthly). This new solution could save you a lot of money.

What Led Me to This App

After that video, I wondered: what if I'm on the go and want to do this on my phone? Is there a solution for that? That's what led me to this app, and it's the best solution I found for Android. Let's dive in!

Install from Play Store

I'm downloading this fresh from the Play Store. Instantly, it's installed. First, go to settings and download the language packs. I'm just getting English, but the app supports other languages for multi-language transcription.

Sample Transcription + UI/UX Intro

Let me show you a sample transcription. The UI is great—segments are broken up with time codes, and you can edit the text. Ergonomic controls at the bottom make playback easy. You can listen to the audio while reading the transcribed text, change playback speed and text size, and highlight the text being spoken. There are speed controls, rewind/fast forward, loop, and a skip silence feature to cut down listening time.

Transcribing an Audio File

Now, I'll show you how to import and transcribe an audio file. The app processes it quickly, and you can listen to the result. This works for any audio file.

Transcribing a Video File

Let's try a video file. I imported a TikTok video, and the app transcribed it right away. You can preview the video, change its size, and see the transcript alongside the video.

Transcribing a Voice Note

There's also a voice recorder. Hit record, give permissions, and start recording. The app transcribes your voice note immediately. This is great for meetings, classes, or quick notes. The audio visualization is a bit lopsided, but otherwise, it's beautiful.

Recap of Use Cases

We covered transcription from an audio file, a video file, and a voice recording—all within the app.

Something to Keep in Mind

The app is based on open-source code, but the author (DigiPom) plans to monetize it in the future. For now, it's completely free, private, and offline, but just be aware of possible changes down the line.
